The largest number of malicious links found in WhatsApp was partly due to the fact that it is the most popular messenger globally because it offers the easiest ways to share messages to a large number of people at once thus, it ensures quick propagation of malicious messages.

Telegram had the fewest detections but was similar in geography to WhatsApp. The highest number of malicious links were detected in Russia (56%), India (6%), and Turkey (4%).

Following a Direction to the telecommunications service providers in the country, the operators, will from July 1, 2016, activate the DO NOT DISTURB facility which gives subscribers the freedom to choose what messages to receive from the various networks.

With this Direction the operators have been mandated to dedicate a common Short Code (2442) which will enable subscribers take informed decisions.

Mr. Tony Ojobo, Director of Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in a statement, said this action was taken in order to protect subscribers from the nuisance of unsolicited texts, and therefore a direct regulatory response to the yearnings of the subscribers.

By this action, he explained, the Commission has invoked a regulatory provision which had hitherto been overlooked by the operators.

Taking cognizance of the broad range of services which include: Banking/Insurance/ Financial Products, Real Estate, Education, Health, Consumer Goods and Automobiles, Communication/ Broadcasting/ Entertainment/ IT, Tourism and leisure, Sports, Religion(Christianity, Islam, others), the Commission directed the operators to give the necessary instructions and clarifications that will enable subscribers subscribe to a particular service/services /none at all.

In fact, a Full DND which is SMS “STOP” to 2442 does not allow the subscriber to receive any unsolicited message from the operators at all.

After waiting for ageless ages, Ntel finally made their first Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) call in Lagos.

Ntel is the company that acquired the core assets of NiTel/MTel in liquidation. the test VoLTE call was made at 3.30pm at ntel’s new Tier III data centre located on Lagos Island. The statement said that VoLTE calls were enabled over a carrier’s high-speed data network instead of on a voice network.
It said that VoLTE calls also connected faster upon dialing and featured ultra-clear high-definition voice quality.

According to the statement, the VoLTE call is completed in partnership with equipment manufacturers, LM Ericsson of Sweden and Sony Electronics of Japan.

”This crystal-clear, high-definition VoLTE call was made via an ntel SIM card and is set to be a significant differentiating factor for ntel, as it progresses with the roll-out of Nigeria’s largest Advanced 4G/LTE network due to be launched shortly.

”The successful test call is a confirmation that the key network elements are now in place to support the full commercial launch of premium integrated voice, video and data services over 4G/LTE.

I must say that this is good news and we are still waiting for the general rollout of their plans. Meanwhile if you are still using 3G only enable smartphone, you may consider upgrading to 4G mobile device.
